Massage Therapy

What are the benefits of massage therapy?

Massage therapy isn’t just about pampering yourself.  It has been around for 5,000 years as a healing modality to ease pain and restore balance to the body. Benefits of massage therapy include the following:

  • Reduces pain, muscle soreness, and tension.
  • Reduces stress and stress hormones such as cortisol (the “aging hormone”).
  • Releases serotonin (the “happy chemical”).
  • Promotes relaxation.
  • Improves circulation, energy, and alertness.
  • Lowers heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Improves immune function.

What’s the difference between Swedish, Deep Tissue, and Medical massage?

Swedish massage uses long strokes and light-to-firm pressure to promote circulation and general relaxation. Deep tissue massage is more focused on a specific issue or area of the body.  It releases tension in the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues.  Medical massage is prescribed by a doctor. It addresses specific medical issues such as chronic pain, inflammation, insomnia, etc.

All types of massage can be helpful, however, Deep tissue and Medical massage can be an especially helpful approach for the following conditions:

  • Cervical and neck disorders
  • Upper cross syndrome and “rounding” of the shoulders
  • Rotator cuff dysfunction
  • Tennis and golfers elbow
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Lower back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Sports injuries
  • Fibromyalgia
  • TMJ

What happens during a session?

After filling out any necessary paperwork, you are led to a treatment room.  Explain your goals (ie. to relax) and any problem areas with the massage therapist.  She will then leave the room and tell you to start face up or down.  You undress down to your comfort level and get under the sheet.  During the massage, you are completely covered with the sheet except for the area being massaged.  The therapist will occasionally ask if the pressure is ok.  It is important to tell the therapist at anytime if the pressure is too much, too little, or if a specific stroke does not feel good.  Communication is key to receive the most benefits of your massage.  After the massage, the therapist will wipe off some of the oil with a warm towel.  She will leave the room so that you can slowly get up and get dressed.  You may feel dizzy or slightly disoriented as your body processes the massage.  If possible, take it easy after the massage and drink plenty of water to flush out any toxins released during the massage.
